Developing and executing a successful internal ownership transition plan is critical for engineering firms seeking to provide an exit strategy for current owners without selling the firm to an external buyer. Similarly, firms that wish to foster firm growth and/or retain key associates must have a workable ownership transition strategy in place. However, many firms find that their current model for buying out retiring owners and admitting new owners fails to achieve the desired results - whether in terms of the funding and cash flow of the plan, selecting the right individuals to become the next generation of owners, or motivating the new owners to maintain the firm’s growth and profitability. This session will explore many of the common pitfalls of internal ownership transition plans and will provide concrete strategies for resolving these issues.
Learning Objectives:
· Identify the common pitfalls that can cause an internal ownership transition plan to fail.
· Describe the steps that may be taken to avoid or correct these obstacles to successful ownership transition.
· Identify possible “criteria for ownership” in developing potential future owners.
