While effective sales and business development efforts are necessary to ensure adequate backlog for a firm to keep its employees busy, monitoring the cost and progress of a project are equally as important to ensure that the work is being done profitably. This paper identifies a number of ways this can be accomplished and explores reasons why projects fall behind schedule or budget and what can be done to overcome these problems. By making the commitment to successfully manage project cost and progress, the successful firm will be in a better position to grow profitability while maintaining or even expanding a committed client base.
